Analysis of CD Cover '19' By Adele

'19' is Adele's first album and it has been a huge success. The CD Cover is very simple yet still stands out and comes across and quite powerful, this is also demonstrated in her music. The album cover clearly focuses on Adele's face as the background is black to ensure that you focus on Adele and nothing else in the image. In the photo Adele is looking down and appears to be sad, this reflects a lot of her songs, which are about love she has lost or is stuck on. The image of her looks very natural and is a simple shot yet projects a strong image. With the black background and dark colours covering her face, it creates a slightly sombre feel and as those something is being hidden. However it is also a very effective picture which is very stylish and sophisticated.
With a black background Adele's name and the title of her album is written in white to ensure it stands out. 'Adele' is written in capitals as the picture is not obvious at a first glance who it is so the name stands out so the audience instantly know who it is. The title of the album '19' is written as though someone hand write it to make the album more personal and not so sophisticated.
The audience for this album would me females between 17-40, due to the genre of the music it is able to appeal to any female of any age.

Analysis of CD Cover 'Year of the Gentleman' By Ne-Yo

The album 'Year of the Gentleman' is a recent very successful album all around the world. From the title and image of the CD cover it is very clear what style and look Ne-Yo was aiming for. Ne-Yo has brought out music before and was renowned for being younger and a new established artist. With the 'Year of the Gentlemen' being his second album he is clearly trying to create a very different image. It is clear that Ne-Yo wishes to show that he is no longer a new young artist, but is now a gentleman. From the title it shows that through this album he has become a gentleman to gain an older and more professional and stylish image. Through this album title he is making a statement that this is the year that he is becoming a gentleman, with his new album and image.
The image on the cover strongly supports the title of the cover, through his clothing and pose for the camera. Ne-Yo's clothing is extremely sophisticated and suggests that he is very wealthy. The outfit is something a gentleman would wear and not a teenager, to show that clear change between his images. With the hat it adds extra style and sophistication to the outfit. The hat is slightly over the face to make it appear as though he is putting the hat on and not posing for the photo being taken. This makes it appear that he isn't just dressing in this outfit for the camera, but this is him naturally. Even though you can't see much of the background, simply from the doors and wall it instantly demonstrates wealth to support his image.
The writing on the album is also very sophisticated and stylish, especially the title of the album, 'The Year of the Gentleman'. The artist's name 'Ne-Yo' is in big bold letters to ensure that the buyer instantly notices the well known name and is attracted to the album before they have even looked at the image or songs, simply because it is Ne-Yo's album. The target audience of the album is mixed both male and females between 15-22. Though I would say that females would be more attracted to the album as Ne-Yo it made to look very attractive. Also the hat is placed on the face as a teaser for the buyer to look inside to see more of him.
Analysis of CD Cover 'Rockferry' by Duffy

Rockferry is Duffy's first album and has been a huge success in the UK. Duffy's music has an indie style to it and this is clearly reflected on the CD cover. The cover is in black and white to give it a slight old fashioned look, as her style of music could be compared to older singers. The clothing and old fashioned train in the background also shows that Duffy is going for a more old fashioned style to her album. Having black and white also makes the album appear more chic and sophisticated. Her hair appears to be quite natural and she clearly isn't trying to look glamorous. Her make-up is fairly simple despite the eyes which stand out as the album is in black and white. On the cover Duffy is looking down with her hand placed on her coat. From this it is clear that she is trying to create a natural image and is not posing for the camera. The picture appears as though Duffy has just got off the train and is walking along looking sombre. The picture makes Duffy look very attractive and also could make you sympathise for her. The meaning of the picture is also shown via the title of the album, 'Rockferry'. Not only is the album called 'Rockferry', but also is a song in the album. The song on the album is about Duffy getting on a train and moving to Rockferry to get away from her former partner. The song is clearly illustrated on the CD cover, even the emotion is conveyed. Not only does it illustrate the song 'Rockferry', but also gives you a taster for what a lot of the music on her album is going to be like. The writing on the album is in white to match the picture on the album, however the writing still stands out as the colours in the picture are quite dark. At the top on the left hand corner 'Duffy' is written, the writing appears as though it has been handwritten and Duffy has signed the album herself, to make it more personal. Duffy is also at the top so that in shops buyers will instantly see Duffy at the top and now it is her CD. The title of the album is at the bottom of the CD cover. The writing does not appear to stand out as much as Duffy does as the top due to her coat, but the writing is in bold letters to make it stand out more. Even though the album is very simple it still catches your eye and gets you interested into the album even if you are not aware of who Duffy is. Through Duffy's emotion and her surroundings it instantly tells the audience that mainly women between 16-40 would be interested in the album, as due to the music and style it is able to appeal to a wide audience.

Lyrics For Chasing Pavements By Adele
I've made up my mind
Don't need to think it over
If I'm wrong I am right
Don't need to look no further
This ain't lust
I know this is love, but
If I tell the world
I'll never say enough
'Cause it was not said to you
And that's exactly what I need to do
If I'm in love with you
Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place
Should I leave it there
Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

Valerie by Mark Ronson Featuring Amy Winehouse Analysis

I have chosen to analyse the Valerie music video by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse. However Amy Winehouse does not feature in the music video, even though her voice is used for the soundtrack. Via doing this, the music video is focused on Mark Ronson, who is not as famous as Amy Winehouse. Having Mark Ronson only featuring in the video clearly shows viewers that it is Mark Ronson’s song, even though Amy Winehouse is the singer. The music video shows the public that he is no longer a DJ, but now plays instruments and creates music. Previously Mark Ronson was famous for being a DJ, with songs such as ‘Ooh Wee’. From this video it is clear to see that he has changed his image and genre. Even though Mark Ronson has previously bought out other songs from his new album ‘Versions’, none of them have become as well known as Valerie. From this music video he has allowed viewers to see clearly who he is, with his smarter and more sophisticated look. The video also clearly shows him playing the guitar to allow the audience to see that he is a talented musician, as other music videos from the album don‘t illustrate this. The music video is set out like a gig, which instantly shows that he is aiming at a different genre than he did before when he played in clubs. The orchestra at the back of the stage also show the audience that he no longer uses a sound system, but a live band, which matches his new genre of music.
The camera uses a lot of close-ups of Mark Ronson’s face to focus the video on him and to ensure the viewer understands that he is the main person in the video. As Mark Ronson was not very well known during the making of the Valerie video the close-ups allow the audience to clearly see who he is and remember his face to help him become more popular and successful. Close-ups are also used of the girls seeing to focus on their outfits which reflects Amy Winehouse’s image and to also show them having a good time and enjoying the song. With the close-ups it is clear to see their enthusiasm and excitement, which then gives the viewer a similar feeling about the song. Close-ups are also used of the crowd to show the type of audience listening to his music and to also show them having a good time and liking the music, e.g. a close-up of a girl dancing. Close-ups are also used of the band and of Mark Ronson playing, as Mark Ronson does not sing, he wants to focus on the instruments in the song. Wide and long shots are used to show the large crowd and show how they are enjoying and getting involved with the music. Over the shoulder shots are used a lot throughout the song. Either over the shoulder of Mark Ronson onto the crowd or over the shoulder of the crowd so that the viewer can get a wide shot of the stage and feel like part of the audience.
In the music video the girls you see get up and sing are deliberately made to look like Amy Winehouse, via using similar style clothes make-up and hair. The girls are all young and very attractive with tops clearly showing their stomachs, cleavage and legs this is known as voyeurism. However the girls are not represented like typical girls would normally in a music video, they are clearly shown to be fans of Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse.
The music video does have some narrative involved. As at the beginning of the video a different performer is performing to set the scene of the gig and to show that Mark Ronson works with different artists. After the performer has finished the music for Valerie starts, it begins very dark so that the audience is unsure of what is happening. Mark Ronson then has to stop the playing as Amy Winehouse has clearly failed to show up for the gig. This is quite ironic as Amy Winehouse has a very good reputation of not turning up to gigs and other events. The audience begin to complain with remarks such as “I was just getting into that”, showing their involvement. However Mark Ronson uses his initiative and uses different girls from the audience, he gives them the lyrics and then goes on to play the song, with them singing in replacement for Amy Winehouse. The video clearly shows Mark Ronson performing, with his orchestra. The video clearly shows that he doesn’t sing, but uses instruments instead. The video clearly shows him performing and his skills with the guitar, as Valerie is a cover of The Zutons version of Valerie. Mark Ronson uses the instruments to create a clear difference with his version of the song, the video clearly shows that and shows even though he is not singing he still has a main role.
Straight cuts are used to edit the music video; the editing is slow via using long shots. This is to ensure the viewer can clearly see what is going on with the narrative and also clearly see Mark Ronson and the crowd having a good time. Faster editing is used when quick beats are used in the song so that the editing matches the music, e.g. quick shot of the saxophones, to match the beat they create in the song.
